Gilmour bought the guitar, a 1969 model with a touch of maple cap and large doll in 1970 from Manny in New York to replace a similar guitar he bought a few weeks tt, which had been stolen. The Black Strat was originally a sunburst color, but had been painted black to Manny. Since then it has undergone many changes (see below) and still exists today, widely cited as his favorite guitar. He still used in the majority of its current performance.

Throughout the 1970s, Gilmour alternates between using neck with maple and rosewood fingerboards on the Stratocaster.
